Going from Forks of the Credit Provincial Park in Caledon to Elora, the Cataract Trailway connects the Grand River and Credit River watersheds. It follows the old Canadian Pacific Railroad bed built in 1879 and operated for over 100 years. Rolling through Ontario’s countryside there is a lot of history along this route as you pass through multiple communities. Highlights of the route include, Shand Dam built in 1942 for flood control of the Grand River, the former Wellington Country House of Industry and Refuge, as well as, the former Beatty Brothers Ltd. and GSW factory in Fergus, which by 1925 was the largest producer and exporter of barn and stable equipment in the British Empire. Be sure to explore the town of Elora and if time allows, head over to the Elora Gorge Conservation Area for a nice scenic break. From here you can also explore the surrounding areas including Emira, Guelph and the Kitchener Waterloo area.
